This unusual material was first discovered around the turquoise mines in China but is not related to turquoise, although it appears to have formed in the same conditions. The mineral that gives its distinctive coloring is strontium, a rare earth mineral. Internal fractures naturally occur but these gemnstones have been stabilized to seal and strengthen.
